10 things Brits always overpay for in Tenerife
The classic tourist taxes, and how to dodge each one.
- Airport taxis without a plan. Pre-book a transfer or take the 40/111 bus for a few euros instead of a 25-30 euro cab.
- Excursions bought on the promenade. The same Teide or whale trip is usually cheaper booked online in advance.
- Sunbeds in the front row. Second and third rows are often half the price for the same sun.
- Seafront breakfast. A full English on the strip costs what a menu del dia costs one street back.
- Bottled water from mini-marts. Supermarkets (Mercadona, HiperDino) sell 5 litres for about a euro.
- Airport car hire with a fat excess. Compare online first; check the excess, not just the daily price.
- Siam Park at the gate. Online tickets are cheaper and skip the queue.
- Cocktails in Las Americas. Happy hours are real - the same drink an hour earlier can be half price.
- Suncream in resort shops. Bring it or buy in a supermarket; factor 50 in a promenade chemist stings more than the sun.
- Camel park / animal "sanctuaries" sold from kiosks. Read reviews before paying for any animal attraction.
Golden rule: if someone on the street is selling it, the online price is almost always better.
